Media Commons

The Media Commons, located on the north and east side of the upper level of the Undergraduate Library, is a collaborative campus effort that provides students and faculty opportunities to experiment with emerging technologies, with expanded opportunities to learn of best practices in educational technology.

In addition to a robust loanable technology program, the Media Commons is a service space that offers faculty, students, and users the ability to create, disseminate, use, and curate digital media. The goal is to meet the need for broad access to media creation tools, information technology training in multimedia hardware and software, and instruction in media literacy.

Provides digital media support and consultation. Focuses on audio and video, but also emerging technology in general.

NanoZoomer Digital Pathology System

The Nanozoomer slide scanning system provides 460nm resolution scans of complete slides. The Nanozoomer will automatically load slides, choose an area to scan, focus on the tissue sections, and scan the slide. The resulting data files are typically a proprietary file format and can be viewed with the free NDP view software. NDP.view is required to view these images. Download and install the software before downloading the image files. NDP view runs on 32 bit and 64 bit Windows machines (Windows XP, Windows 7).

NMR Facility- Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectrometer and Data processing software

Agilent 600MHz NMR: One Minute-NMR. One Minute-NMR‚Ñ¢ is a fully automatic sample handling and data acquisition system. Just load the samples, queue them in the One Minute-NMR‚Ñ¢ software interface, and return to your office and wait for an email indicating your data has been acquired. Radiocarbon Dating Lab

We provide radiometric 14C dating services for 35 years and sample prep for AMS 14C dating in collaboration with Oxford Univ., Lawrence Livermore National Lab, and now UC-Irvine for 20 years.

Rigaku MiniFlex 600 (MiniFlex)

The benchtop powder X-ray instrument is set up to collect PXRD in reflection mode with a 2θ scan range of 3° to 120°.  The instrument uses Cu radiation and a wide area scintillation counter detection system.  The instrument is operated at the maximum power 600W (40kV – 15mA) and data collection scans can be continuous or step-wise.  A variety of sample preparation techniques can be used and we have three zero background single crystal quartz sample holders.  The system is available for wide-angle, powder, and film x-ray diffraction experiments on samples ranging from minerals to macromolecules.

The Microscopy Suite, Beckman Imaging Technology Group

A wide range of imaging modalities and supporting equipment is available for the preparation, imaging, and analysis of microscopic specimens. Instruments in the facility include dissecting, stereology, fluorescence, confocal, transmission electron, environmental scanning electron, atomic force and near field scanning optical microscopes, and micro- and nano-XCT. Various supporting facilities include a wet lab and a library of books and small equipment available for checkout. Ancillary equipment housed in the supporting facilities includes an ultramicrotome, a carbon evaporator, a sputter coater, a fiber optic puller, and a critical point dryer. Consult the equipment pages for detailed information. Research staff are on hand to teach and aid each user in accomplishing his or her scientific goals within the Microscopy Suite. The Microscopy Suite is located in the basement of the Beckman Institute in suite B606.

The Survey of Organizational Research Climate (SOURCE)

Validated instrument specifically designed to measure empirically the climate of research integrity in academic organizations.Results can help individual academic and research institutions: characterize and compare departmental research integrity climates, assess the efficacy of educational and mentoring approaches, detect where research policies or practices (e.g., concerning data management, etc.) might need attention through responsible conduct of research (RCR) instruction, document and demonstrate for research sponsors institutional commitment to research integrity and RCR education, and justify enhanced efforts to foster a climate of integrity education and quality research.

Ultra-High-Resolution MR Spectroscopic Imaging

Our goal is to provide an unprecedented capability for metabolic and physiological imaging for biomedical applications, including drug discovery, brain mapping, and early detection of cancers. Our initial focus will be on implementing and validating a novel technology to enable the acquisition, processing, and analysis of high-dimensional MR spatiospectral data. Specialized algorithms and software will be developed for signal processing, image reconstruction and spectral estimation to facilitate biomedical applications of the new technology.

UV Spectrophotometer

The UV-1800 UV-VIS spectrophotometer achieves a resolution of 1 nm, the highest in its class, in a compact design. Offering an array of user-friendly features, and can be used either as a stand-alone instrument or as a PC-controlled instrument. A new PC has been purchased for the lab to specifically use with the UV-VIS and recently purchased TOC-LCPN.
