We are a unit of the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The Center traces its heritage to the Biomedical Magnetic Resonance Laboratory founded at the University of Illinois by Professor Paul Lauterbur, a winner of the Nobel Prize in Medicine. We are a state-of-the-art biomedical imaging facility committed to the development of cutting edge techniques which integrate magnetic resonance methods with other imaging techniques, including optical imaging, eye-tracking, EEG and MEG.

A wide range of imaging modalities and supporting equipment is available for the preparation, imaging, and analysis of microscopic specimens.
Instruments in the facility include dissecting, stereology, fluorescence, confocal, transmission electron, environmental scanning electron, atomic force and near field scanning optical microscopes, and micro- and nano-XCT. Various supporting facilities include a wet lab and a library of books and small equipment available for checkout. Ancillary equipment housed in the supporting facilities includes an ultramicrotome, a carbon evaporator, a sputter coater, a fiber optic puller, and a critical point dryer. Consult the equipment pages for detailed information. Research staff are on hand to teach and aid each user in accomplishing his or her scientific goals within the Microscopy Suite.

The Visualization Laboratory resources support a wide variety of projects for research including: 2D/3D/4D image analysis and quantification, scientific visualization, ultra-high speed video, macro-photography, macro-video, video production, 3D animation, high-resolution 2D scanning, 3D object scanning, research presentation, publication graphics, and additional capabilities in support of imaging.

The Visualization Laboratory (Vislab), a component of the Imaging Technology Group, serves dozens of research groups and hundreds of researchers in nearly every department on campus from the Beckman Institute, providing research graphics in the form of journal cover artwork, macro photography, paper schematics & figures, infographics, SEM false coloring, video stabilization, 3D scanning, and more. Since its inception over 20 years ago, the Vislab has been awarded over 75 journal covers and has had graphics published on BBC, Wired, Science, Nature, and PNAS to name a few.
